The National Center for Boundless PlaygroundsŪ is the first national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities create extraordinary barrier-free playgrounds where children of all abilities can develop essential skills for life as they learn together through play. Each Boundless Playground addresses the developmental needs of children and celebrates the principles of universally accessible design. As a result, all children - including those with physical, developmental, cognitive and sensory disabilities - are able to experience independent, self-directed play, each at his or her own highest level of ability.

Headquartered in Bloomfield, Connecticut, Boundless Playgrounds was founded in 1997 by a passionate team of parents and professionals. Its co-founders and co-executive directors are Amy Jaffe Barzach and Jean Schappet, CPSI (Certified Playground Safety Inspector).

Boundless Playgrounds grew from a grassroots movement inspired by Amy and Peter Barzach. After the death of their nine-month-old son, Jonathan, from spinal muscular atrophy, the couple recruited an army of 1,200 volunteers to create a playground where children of all abilities could play together. This universally accessible 25,000 square-foot community playground, Jonathan's Dream, opened in their hometown of West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1996. A resulting article about the playground in Time magazine generated hundreds of inquiries. Boundless Playgrounds was formed in 1997 in response to this outpouring of calls for assistance and officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1998.

The National Center for Boundless PlaygroundsŪ works collaboratively with playground equipment producers, vendors and design professionals who are interested in Boundless Playgrounds performance standards for play environments that are configured to address the developmental needs of children. As an unbiased, knowledgeable but neutral nonprofit organization, Boundless Playgrounds does not manufacture or sell playground equipment.
